Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common Die in the Dungeon questions. Updated for the current meta.
How do I unlock new dice types?
Most dice unlock by clearing specific floors. Heal Dice unlocks after Floor 1, Ice Dice after Floor 2, Vampire Dice after Floor 3, and so on up to Wild Dice at Floor 8. Each new dice type adds strategic options — try them out on lower floors before committing to a build that relies on dice you are not yet comfortable using. Some dice types synergize with specific relics, so unlocking more dice types also expands your relic pool.
Can I stack the same relic multiple times?
Yes, most relics stack additively. For example, two Dice Bag+ relics give you +2 extra dice per combat. Some unique relics like Philosopher's Stone do not stack — their effect is one-of-a-kind. The stacking system rewards finding duplicate relics, so do not skip relic rooms even if you already own a copy of what is offered. Stacked common relics often outperform a single rare relic.
What is the best dice combination for beginners?
We recommend Vampire Dice + Shield Dice + Heal Dice for a safe, sustainable build. Vampire Dice provides sustain through lifesteal, Shield Dice blocks incoming damage before it hits your health, and Heal Dice recovers health lost through attrition. This combination forgives mistakes and lets you learn enemy attack patterns without constant restarts. Once comfortable, swap Shield Dice for Fire or Lightning Dice to add damage output.
How does the Golden Dice scaling work?
Golden Dice gains +1 to its minimum roll each turn in combat (capped at +4). This means by turn 5, your Golden Dice always rolls at least 4, making it one of the most consistent damage sources in the game. With Philosopher's Stone relic, the minimum roll bonus applies to all dice — not just Golden Dice — making Golden Dice + Philosopher's Stone the strongest late-game combo in the current meta. Prioritize finding this relic if you are building around Golden Dice.
What happens after Floor 12?
After clearing Floor 12, the game enters Endless Mode where enemies scale infinitely in both health and damage. Your goal shifts from survival to optimization — push as far as possible with your build to earn leaderboard points. Endless Mode rewards builds that scale over time (Golden Dice, stacking relics) over front-loaded burst builds. Plan your relic and dice choices from Floor 1 with Endless Mode in mind if you want to compete on the leaderboard.
How often is the game updated?
The developers release patches approximately every 2-3 weeks. Major balance changes are announced on the Steam page and Discord server. The game is in Early Access, so dice balance, relic effects, and floor enemy compositions can shift between patches. Check the news page on this site for patch note summaries and meta updates after each significant patch.
What is the best strategy for boss fights?
Each boss has a predictable attack pattern. Spend your first combat turn observing — do not commit your best dice until you understand the rhythm. Bosses typically alternate between high-damage single-target attacks and weaker multi-target attacks. Save Shield Dice for the heavy hits and use your sustain (Vampire/Heal Dice) during the multi-target phases. For the final boss (Floor 12), bring at least one Ice Dice to control its enrage timer — freezing the boss during its enrage phase can be the difference between victory and a wipe.
How do relic synergies work and which are the best?
Relics fall into three synergy categories: dice-enhancing (improve specific dice types), global-scaling (affect all dice or your character), and utility (extra draws, rerolls, inventory). The strongest builds combine all three: a dice-enhancing relic for your primary damage dice, a global-scaling relic like Philosopher's Stone or Dice Bag+, and a utility relic for consistency. Avoid relics that buff dice types you are not using — a relic that buffs Fire Dice is useless in a Golden Dice build. Sell off-synergy relics at shops for currency to reroll for better options.
Should I take every relic I find?
No. More relics are not always better. Each relic you take dilutes future relic offerings — the game weights new relic spawns based on what you already own. Taking a relic that does not fit your build makes it harder to find the relics you actually need. Be selective: if a relic has no synergy with your current dice setup, skip it. The gold you save by not buying unnecessary relics can be used at shops to reroll for targeted upgrades.
What are the most common beginner mistakes in Die in the Dungeon?
The top five: (1) Over-committing dice on turn one — always leave at least one die for defense or repositioning. (2) Ignoring relic synergies — a random collection of powerful relics is weaker than a focused set of relics that all buff the same strategy. (3) Skipping heal rooms — even if your health looks fine, heal rooms restore resources beyond just HP. (4) Not adapting to what the run offers — if the game drops three Fire Dice relics by Floor 3, pivot to a Fire build even if you planned to go Golden. (5) Underestimating Ice Dice — control effects that delay enemy turns are often more valuable than raw damage output.
